TATUM TAKES 7TH WIN OF THE SEASON ON FINAL LAP PASS
Friday, August 27, 2010
by John McLeod

Tommy Tatum took another step closer to the 2010 Grand Stock championship by grabbing his 7th win of the season tonight at Southside Speedway.

Heading into the final lap of the race, Tatum made a pass for the lead over Shawn Hopkins in turn 1 and finally passed Hopkins heading into the final turn.

“I knew his (Hopkins) car was getting loose there towards the end of the race and that helped us get to him,” Tatum said. “Man, they had us covered tonight. It’s just as the race wore on, the track got slick and we were able to catch up and get one tonight.”

Hopkins crossed the line in second with J. D. Eversole, Mark Simpson and Chris Hott rounding out the top five.

Tatum can wrap up the championship by starting the race next Friday.

Jamie Hite captured his 4th win of the season in the U-CAR 25-lap main event. Hite grabbed the lead during the mid-stages of the race and went on to grab the title.

Austin Dodge came across the line in second with Mike Chapman coming home in third. Frank Silva and Jason Marshall rounded out the top five.

Shayne Lockhart led from green to checker in the Virginia 125 Late Model Showdown. Lockhart went from the pole and led all 125 laps with Eddie Johnson placing second. Nick Smith, Lin O’Neil and Chris Dodson rounded out the top five. With the fifth place finish, Dodson captured the division championship.

Mike Ganoe grabbed the checkered flag in the Street Stock 50-lap main event and with the win, grabbed the division championship. Ganoe started last and moved into the lead on lap 31 and never looked back. Brian Smith came from 20th starting spot to finish second with Justin Groome coming home third. Gary Turner and James Loving rounding out the top five.

Championship Night is next Friday night as all 6 of the divisions will be in action for the final time in 2010. Gates open at 6 p.m. with racing action kicking off at 7:30 p.m.
